Defend the Deep

Ecodeo’s award-winning short documentary Defend The Deep is spearheading the critical movement to prevent deep-sea mining before it begins. Honored with the Marine Science Award at the International Ocean Film Festival and selected for screening at the Korea Ocean Film Festival, our short documentary is gaining international recognition in the fight to protect our oceans. Deep-seabed mining (DSM) threatens to extract minerals like manganese, copper, cobalt, and nickel from the ocean floor, potentially causing irreversible damage to ancient marine ecosystems that have evolved over millions of years. Despite industry claims about these minerals being necessary for green technology, growing evidence suggests alternatives through recycling and circular economy approaches can meet our needs without this destructive practice.

Our film has successfully raised awareness, but we’re now in a race against time. Recent policy developments have accelerated the timeline toward potential mining approval, including executive actions to fast-track strategic mineral extraction from both U.S. and international waters. Ecodeo is currently updating the documentary with critical new developments, expanding distribution to reach decision-makers and the public, partnering with global ocean conservation organizations, and creating targeted campaign materials for diverse audiences. The film keeps the value of deep-sea ecosystems at the forefront and challenges the narrative that we must sacrifice ancient ocean habitats for technological progress.

Join us in this crucial effort to protect one of Earth's last pristine frontiers before irreversible damage begins.
